Speckled Wood Pararge aegeria

   

A butterfly of dappled shade, quite at home in any garden with trees or tall shrubs from March into October. In cool weather the males perch in sunny spots and each defends his own territory, driving off other males while waiting for a female to come looking for a mate, while in warmer weather they patrol, searching for unmated females. The sexes look very similar
