Grayling (Hipparchia semele)

A late summer butterfly with quite a restricted distribution in the county, mostly coastal but also on a number of Mendip and Quantock sites.

It rarely if ever comes to nectar and seems to favour windswept places where it usually flies low and, on landing, promptly closes its wings so that the camouflaged underside conceals it, making it a challenge to find.
