Gatekeeper Pyronia tithonus
A common and widespread species, almost always present at flowering Brambles through July and August and into September. Males have a broad dark bar across the forewing and this is absent on the females. Somewhat similar to the Meadow Brown when their wings are closed, though the latter is bigger and the Gatekeeper has tiny white dots on the underside of the hind-wing while the Meadow Brown has black ones.
